Ticking Tequila: Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean “Deep Black” Casamigos

Watch brand/spirits brand collaborations are rare, and not always the most natural of pairings — Urwerk’s high-tech Macallan flask comes to mind — but here’s one that actually seems (somewhat) like a sensible fit: the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean “Deep Black” Casamigos is a limited-edition, U.S.-exclusive timepiece springing from a partnership between the Swiss watch maison and the dynamic young producer of top-shelf tequilas and mezcals — with the common thread being Omega “ambassador” and Casamigos co-founder George Clooney.

Clooney, who has been a celebrity endorser of Omega since 2007, founded Casamigos with longtime friends Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman. (Gerber, a nightlife and entertainment entrepreneur, is also connected to Omega through his wife, supermodel Cindy Crawford, who has been an endorser of Omega even longer than Clooney, since 1995.) According to Omega President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann, the watch brand considers Clooney and Gerber as “part of the Omega family,” and was inspired to produce a special timepiece “that celebrated our ‘Deep Black’ design concept as well as the look of their world-renowned Casamigos Tequila and Mezcal.”

Omega introduced its first “Deep Black” Seamaster Planet Ocean watches in 2016, garnering attention for their use of black zirconium oxide ceramic cases measuring 45.5 mm and boasting a water resistance of 600 meters, or 2,000 feet, at the time an unprecedented depth level for a ceramic watch case. The case of this new model matches those dimensions but is finished with a new matte texture that Omega says is inspired by the bottle of the recently launched Casamigos Mezcal.

The matte black finish on the ceramic case echoes the look of a Casamigos bottle.

The dial, like the case, is made of matte black ceramic and also features details directly inspired by the design of Casamigos bottles: the text for “Seamaster,” “GMT” and “600m/2,000ft,” as well as the tips of the central seconds hand and GMT hand, are in the same shade of teal used for the Casamigos logo. On the back of the watch, a specially treated sapphire window echoes the look of the dark-frosted glass of the Casamigos Mezcal bottle. Lacquered onto its surface in white are the Casamigos logo, with the illustration of an agave plant (for those not so spirits-savvy, Weber blue agave is the species distilled to make mezcal and tequila) along with the watch’s limited edition number (out of 80 total pieces).

The agave plant from the Casamigos logo decorates the smoked sapphire caseback.

Behind this dusky, translucent caseback window beats the movement, Omega’s self-winding Caliber 8906, with a co-axial escapement and a 60-hour power reserve, which powers the timekeeping, the GMT function, and date display in the window at 3 o’clock. Like all Master Chronometer movements, it has passed eight rigorous tests set by METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (for more on that battery of tests, click here), ensuring a high level of endurance, precision, and resistance to magnetic fields. The watch is available exclusively through Omega boutiques in the U.S., priced at $11,600.
